Notes for Pauline Bernice McCAULEY
The William McCauleys were close friends of the John Simmons' at Leona, Kansas, and together they bought 100 acres from the Pierce DLC in the Eola Hills, west of Salem; the McCauleys took the west half, the Simmons' the east half. The Simmons' moved to Oregon and built their home first. Wm McCauley and his son came next and lived with the Simmons' while they built the McCauley home. They shared the same lane and built houses across the lane from one another, thus their children grew up together and took turns driving to high school, etc. So Pauline and Erma met and married brothers. The McCauleys were, and are, prominent around Leona, Kansas: one McCauley still rents the farm of Erma's cousin across the road from the cemetary north of Leona; which cemetary has many McCauleys.

Ralph Sr related that he always had a kind regard for Pauline. It seems that while Erma was "confined" in Salem Maternity Home when Ralph Jr was born, Ralph Sr was left to batch alone and for a week or so the dishes piled up in the sink, the bed was never made up, the floors never swept, etc., etc. -- On the day Erma was to come home Ralph decided that he'd take the afternoon off and clean house. - - As he was comming into the house at noon he met Aunt Pauline at the door - - she'd been there all morning dusting, cleaning, washing the dishes, mopping floors, making beds, etc. [Ed: Having that housework done was quite some relief, as anyone who knew my Dad can attest.]
Notes for Wilfred Willis (Spouse 1)
Wilfred's sister, Mabel recalled that Wilfred was a small man - but strong hard worker, quick tempered but over in a minute. Had long curls [till 4 yrs old] he tried to keep Ralph out of mischief when they were little. He had mastoid infection after the flu , was very ill. They took part of the juggler vein out because of blood poison during his last year in high school, [Ralph Sr says, 1st yr of H.S., he was 15 yrs old]. Loved to dance.

Wilfred farmed some and worked at the box Factory in West Salem, then
worked during the second World War in the naval ship yards at Bremerton,
Washington, then settled after the war at Salem, working as a warehouseman and truck driver. Wilfred belonged to the masonic lodge and went "through the chairs" in Salem.
