Notes for George LANSING
George's civil war enlistment papers describe him as blue eyed, brown hair, dark complexion and 5 feet 6inches high. He enlisted on Jan. 4,1862 as a private in Company G, of the 5th Regiment of Minnesota Infantry after his father had on Christmass day made his written consent (witnessed by one Eli S Pickett). He reenlisted Feb. 26,1864 as Veteran Volunteer. He had made Sergeant before July 1865 and was mustered out with his company on Sept 6,1865 at Demopolis, Alabama having participated in "Shermans march to the sea". Ralph and Fred Wilson recalled family Civil War tales of killing a dog and eating it; and of soldiers putting lighted matches to the soles of feet of corpses to see movement, etc.

At his death George was on the pension rolls at $12 per month. He always complained that his brother, William, got $18 per month while he, Geo, "was with Sherman",was in longer, had attained higher rank and got only $12 pension. Cornelia continued to receive a pension untill 1938. After the war he returned to Minnesota, and after about 2 years married Cornelia Pickett, at Glasgow, Minn. They spent the next 11 years in Minnesota, then 15 years in Iowa, 2 years in Kansas and on to Oregon (this according to his 1907 Declaration for Pension).
