Notes for Andrew (Spouse 1)
In the 1870 Minnesota census our Andrew Lansing, age 62, white, male, etc. lists his birthplace as New York so it's possible (even likely) that our family ties into that early Colonial Lansing family. If so, we have even more historical patriot roots! The Lansing family Bibles now (1989) in the possession of Leona (Starr) Zeller came to her via her mother, Isabella (Lansing) Starr, and her grandfather, George Lansing, son of Andrew Lansing. The first Bible is an "Original Translation", leather bound, printed in New York by D. Franshaw for the American Bible Society in 1841. On the front fly leaf is written "Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Lansing." Also in front 3 or 4 short homilies in verse are handwritten. Between the Old and New Testaments are four pages of entries (handwritten) of marriages (1st page), births (pages 2 & 3), and deaths (page 4). Each page of births is divided into two columns. The first column (page 2) is headed by Andrew Lansing, Melissa Brown, then five children (incl. George and William Lansing) in order of date of birth. The second column (same page 2) is headed by Angelia Lansing, A. Lansing (same birth date as Andrew in first column) then 3 more Children. These seem to be written in the same hand as the A. Lansing who signed the consent for George Lansing to enlist in the Service Dec. 25,1861. We infer that Andrew, the father of George and William, was married twice and the family stories of halfbrothers are accounted for; also that the father "Dan'l" listed on Williams death certificate is in error (or might have been a middle name or nickname. These Bibles totaly refute this writers earlier theory that Daniel/Andrew had father/stepfather relation to Geo & Wm). The births listed on page 3 are probably all grandchildren of Andrew; he would have been 65 to 80 years old at their birth. Also on page 3 are listed Abram Lansing (spelled Abraham on page 4) and Hare E. Ogden. This Abraham is probably the "uncle Abe" remembered by Ethel (Lansing) Wilson (Portland, Oregon 1977). The second Bible is similarly leather bound, Am. Bible Soc. printed in 1867 and is the family Bible of George Lansing et. al. On the back fly leaf of this Bible is the following verbatum - Charlotta Martin born in Ireland Married name Shay daughter Harriet Shay married Danial Pickett, Dau. Cornelia Picket m. Geo Lansing All of the other specific data from these two Bibles are included in the following listing of the Lansing family.
