Transylvania and the Carpathian Mountains

Braşov and Săcele sit in the inside corner of the Carpathian Mountains where the range runs East-West through central Romania, then bends North and runs North-South up into Ukraine. As such, the landscape is beautiful and outdoor opportunities abound.

On the last evening in Romania, Joe took us off-roading up to top of Cabana Ciucas Peak. This is a view along the way.
Headed off road to Cabana Ciucas Peak (we really didn't go "off road", but we did get into some 4WD only roads).

I'm not really sure if Cabana Ciucas Peak is that mountain spike in the distance, or, since there is a resort where we parked, if this is Cabana Ciucas Peak we're standing on.

A significant portion of this road was constructed of concrete "rail-road ties". Aligned perpendicular to the road and set side-by-side, these created a very wash-board like surface to climb and descend. Most people walk this, but with the right 4WD vehicle it can be driven. Just remember to use engine braking on the descent.

This plant was being grown by a neighbor in Săcele for use as firewood (maybe wood chunks). We're not sure what it is, but it grows very quickly to tree-size (one to two years).
